New to Helbreath
Everything you need for your first hour in the realm — from making an account to swinging your first sword. Helbreath is an old-school action RPG: you move and fight with the mouse, grow through open-world hunting, and choose your own path between warrior and mage.
Create your account
Grab the game from the launcher on the front page and let it patch to the latest build. At the title screen choose Create Account, pick a login name and password, and confirm. Your account is the shell that holds your characters — you can make several characters under one login and switch between them freely.
Create your character
From the character screen choose Create Character. You pick a name, gender and appearance, then distribute your starting stat points across Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Magic, Vitality and Luck. There are no locked classes in Helbreath — your build is defined by where you spend points and which skills you raise. A rough guide:
- Warrior — lean into Strength, Vitality and Dexterity, train melee weapon skills, and wear heavy armour.
- Mage — favour Intelligence and Magic to unlock higher spell circles and cast for more damage.
- Hybrid — spread across both to fight and cast, at the cost of peaking later than a pure build.
See Character Development for how each stat feeds HP, MP, SP and your damage, the Build Calculator to try a spread against the real point budget, and Talents & Builds for full build templates.
Your starter kit
Every new character enters the world already equipped to survive the first fights. On creation you receive:
- A weapon for your path — a Dagger and a Short Sword if you took a warrior class, or a Magic Wand (MS0) II if you took a mage. Both come already bound to you.
- Clothes — knee trousers and a shirt or bodice, so you are not walking out in nothing.
- 300 gold to cover your first repairs and shop trips.
- 2 Health and 2 Big Health potions to top up HP mid-fight.
- 2 Mana and 2 Big Mana potions to keep casting.
- 2 Revitalizing and 2 Big Revitalizing potions to restore stamina (SP) when it runs low.
Controls & entering the world
Pick your character and log in to drop into town. Helbreath is mouse-driven at heart:
- Move by clicking where you want to walk; hold to keep moving. You can also walk with W A S D — two keys at once go diagonally.
- Run by holding Shift while you move, or press Ctrl+R once so you never have to hold it. Running burns stamina.
- Attack by clicking an enemy while in attack mode. Tab switches between peace and combat; Home (or 4) turns on safe attack, which refuses to swing at an ally.
- Talk to NPCs by clicking them to open shops, banks and quest givers.
- Chat by pressing Enter, typing, and hitting Enter again.
Two panels do most of the work: F5 opens your character sheet (stats, HP/MP/SP) and F6 opens your inventory. A complete rundown of every key and text command is on Commands & Hotkeys.
Levelling up
You grow by hunting monsters. Kills grant experience toward your next level, and each level gives you three fresh stat points to spend. Just as important, using a weapon, spell or skill raises its mastery over time — the more you swing a sword the harder and more reliably it lands. Early on, clear the low-tier monsters near town, bank your loot often, and keep your potions stocked. When a zone stops being dangerous, move to a tougher one. The Maps guide shows which hunting grounds suit which level range.
Gearing up
Fresh gear comes from three places: shops in town for the basics, monster drops for better and rarer pieces, and crafting/enchanting once you have the materials. As you find upgrades, equip them from your inventory (F6) and watch your stat requirements — heavier weapons and armour demand more Strength or Magic to use without penalty. Later you can push gear further with the +N upgrade and shard/fragment enchant systems. Start planning with these:
- Character Development — stats, HP/MP/SP and how your numbers grow.
- Combat — damage, mastery, safe/attack modes, PvP and EK/PK.
- Maps — towns, dungeons and where to hunt at your level.
- Statted Items — the full catalogue of what you can actually get.
